Answers, in plain language.
The questions we hear most often about paralegal services in Ontario.
What is a licensed paralegal?
A licensed paralegal is a legal professional licensed and regulated by the Law Society of Ontario, the same body that regulates lawyers. Paralegals can represent you in specific areas such as Small Claims Court, traffic and provincial offences, the Landlord and Tenant Board, and certain tribunals.
A paralegal is not a lawyer, but for the matters within a paralegal's scope, it's often a faster and more affordable way to get proper representation.
What can you help me with?
Common matters include Small Claims Court (claims up to $35,000), traffic tickets and Highway Traffic Act charges, other provincial offences, Landlord and Tenant Board disputes, and various administrative tribunals.
If your matter falls outside what a paralegal can handle, we'll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction.
How much will it cost?
It depends on the matter, but paralegal representation is typically much more affordable than a lawyer for the areas we handle. We give you a clear, honest estimate in your free consultation, before you commit to anything.
I got a traffic ticket. Should I just pay it?
Not necessarily. Paying a ticket is a guilty plea, which can mean demerit points, higher insurance, and a mark on your record. Many tickets can be reduced or resolved. It's worth a quick, free review before you decide.
Do I have to go to court myself?
Often, no. For many matters your paralegal can appear on your behalf, so you don't have to take time off work or face the process alone. We'll tell you exactly what your matter requires.
What's the difference between a paralegal and a lawyer?
Both are licensed by the Law Society of Ontario, but they have different scopes of practice. Lawyers can handle any legal matter; paralegals are authorized to handle specific areas like Small Claims, provincial offences, and Landlord and Tenant Board matters. For those areas, a paralegal is usually the more cost-effective choice.
What does the free consultation include?
A one-on-one conversation: we listen to your situation, identify the key issues, outline your realistic options, and give you a clear sense of cost and next steps. There's no obligation to hire us afterward.
Are paralegals regulated and insured?
Yes. Ontario paralegals are licensed and regulated by the Law Society of Ontario, carry professional liability insurance, and must follow a professional code of conduct. You get accountable, protected representation.
